One Million Dollars “Energy State”
One Million Dollars was an Auckland-based soul-jazz collective with a reputation for energetic live performances. The band specialised in original songs, with a sound combining elements of 70′s soul, funk and samba, built around the songwriting skills of singer/guitarist Richard Setford. With four horns, multipart vocals and occasional lyrics in Brazilian Portuguese, the eleven-piece band brought a fresh perspective to the New Zealand music scene.
OMD released their Sugarlicks recorded album “Energy State” to rave reviews in 2003. Recorded through vintage neve and pultec valve mixing consoles and compressors at Sugarlicks, the album has a distinctive rich, warm, lush sound in the resultant mix.
“Here is a band that is bringing the fresh sound of NZ pop-soul to the music scene.”
“This is the kind of album that groove junkies spend their lives trawling collections of rare vintage vinyl in the hope of finding. And yet here it is, local and readily available to everyone”.
Nick Bollinger The Listener
“…what’s satisfying is how they blend their inevitable sunny disposition and influences into songs that are memorable for more than just their perspiration-potential…they’re infectious, breezy and bilingual…”
Russell Baillie NZ Herald
“A vibrant combination of Pacific soul, Steely Dan like fusion, percussive bossa nova, and Talkin’ Loud (particularly Incognito and Galliano) inspired funk, this album is instantly likeable.”
“Get Off” is an acoustic folk/hip-hop/reggae hybrid featuring some pretty impressive hearfelt vocals, a bluesy, dub stepper”

Added to this is the #1 alternative radio remix of “Get Off” by DJ Manuel Bundy, and European rave reviews of other singles such as “Who You Are”, and the OMD sound has found a secure and distinct place in NZ funk and soul music history.
OMD also made a splash with their music videos for “Who You Are” and “The Original“.
Richie Setford continues to record in both his low-fi project “Bannerman”, and soon in conjunction with Manuel Bundy on a much anticipated Sugarlicks ep … stay tuned.
