Richie Setford & OMD

One Million Dollars was an Auckland-based soul-jazz collective with a reputation for energetic live performances. The band specialised in original songs, with a sound combining elements of 70's soul, funk and samba, built around the songwriting skills of singer/guitarist Richard Setford. With four horns, multipart vocals and occasional lyrics in Brazilian Portuguese, the eleven-piece band brought a fresh perspective to the New Zealand music scene.

OMD released their Sugarlicks recorded album “Energy State” to rave reviews in 2003. Recorded through vintage neve and pultec valve mixing consoles and compressors at Sugarlicks, the album has a distinctive rich, warm, lush sound in the resultant mix.

With a ten member line up that included Steph Brown on Rhodes (Anika Moa / The Artistry), Tom Atkinson on drums (Hmx / Damn Native), the Brazilian import Hobson, a full horn section and of course lead singer “Mr President” Richie Setford, the album received rave reviews.

Added to this is the #1 alternative radio remix of “Get Off” by DJ Manuel Bundy, and European rave reviews of other singles such as "Who You Are", and the OMD sound has found a secure and distinct place in NZ funk and soul music history.

Richie Setford continues to record in both his low-fi project "Bannerman", and soon in conjunction with Manuel Bundy on a much anticipated Sugarlicks ep ... stay tuned. Keep in touch with Richie's news on the Sugarlicks blog.
