A unique collabayibobo between Maya and Gmuva exploring afro-beat and hip hop dub in a pacific context.

Maya Dorcil’s earliest musical memories stemmed from distant nocturnal voodoo beats in Petion-ville his birthplace in the Island of Haiti, in the Caribbean.  It wasn’t however until he moved to New York in the mid 80’s that he started honing his musical skills, firstly by studying a few traditional voodoo rhythms with drumming master: Bonga Gaston Jean-baptiste, and then starting in the summer of 87: Natty Ginen, an all-acoustic drumming ensemble, jamming every summer Sunday next in Central Park's Naumburg Bandshell.

Maya eventually shifted to New Zealand, and his newly formed band Voodoo Moon won the nationwide Battle of the Bands in its first year. Gmuva's musical bent comes from playing a little in punk funk outfits in Dunedin, and Djing in Bath St's club. His extra flavour comes via a half Lebanese background, and a love of soul music. The two met at one of Auckland club Khuja Lounge's live electronic sessions, and the project was born. ♥
